Korean Contemporary Dance <SOMOO>, inspired by the female Gaksital, to be showcased in Brazil
'Art Project Bora' participates in Brazil's SESC Dance Biennale (9.20-21) and holds a special performance in Bom Retiro (9.23) -
The Korean Cultural Center (Director: Kim Chul-hong) is promoting the performance of 'SOMOO' by 'Art Project Bora' through the 2023 Traveling Korean Arts Program, a collaborative project with the Korea International Culture Exchange Promotion Agency (KOFICE), and SESC, a local cultural institution in Brazil.
The Traveling Korean Arts project is a cultural program launched to promote excellent Korean culture worldwide through cooperation between KOFICE, the Cultural Center, and local cultural institutions. This year, particularly, the contemporary dance team from Korea 'Art Project Bora' will participate in the ‘SESC Dance Biennale’ event held in Campinas and also perform at ‘SESC Bom Retiro’ located in Bom Retiro - home to most Koreans living in Brazil - on occasion of 60th anniversary of Korean immigration to Brazil.
This year's invited work <SOMOO> is a representative work led by choreographer 'Kim Bora' of 'Art Project Bora'. Inspired by ‘SOMOO’, named after the only female character wearing Gaksital mask from traditional Korean mask play, this piece was born with feminist messages reflecting on women's bodies.
'SESC Dance Biennale' is an international dance festival held biennially by SESC. This year it will be centered around 'SESC Campinas', with performances of <SOMOO> scheduled for September 20th(Wednesday) and 21st(Thursday) at Teatro Castro Mendes theater.

Kim Chul-hong, director of The Korean Cultural Center said "I am pleased that we are able to showcase <SOMOO>, recognized internationally for its artistic quality at SESC's venue which is one of biggest cultural institutions in Brazil. We expect this piece will resonate especially well given strong feminist movement here."
