Events at KCCs abroad

A new exhibition titled ‘Taste of Manhwa’ opened in the Korean Cultural Center in Hungary on 29 September 2023. The exhibition was opened by H.E. Hong Kyudok, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Hungary, by In Sukjin, the Director of the Korean Cultural Center in Hungary and by the curator of the exhibition, Shin Myeong Hwan.

The works of the exhibition include comics that were published as books after being serialized as webtoons, and vice versa. So regardless of the medium in which the stories were published, they are all manhwas, or comics that are distinctively Korean. Ha Minseok's children's comics bring the witty, imaginative and adventurous world of classic Korean children's comics to life, yet in a distinct authorial style. The comics by Lee Yoonhee, Ancco, Hong Yeonsik and Ma Yeongshin are outstanding in both illustration and text. The genre characteristics of the teen comic, action, martial arts, romance and fantasy elements all appear in these works. Sooshinji’s Sarin, the daughter-in-law, has appeared in a series on the author's social media platforms, independent of webtoon platforms, where it quickly gained popularity.

On 30 September at the Budapest International Book Festival, the head of the Korean Comic Book Society and curator of the Budapest exhibition, Shin Myeong Hwan gave a lecture on Korean comics, followed by a discussion with the artists by Bence Kránicz, journalist of 24.hu and lecturer at the Film Studies Department of ELTE.

The exhibition can be visited by 31 January 2024 in the opening hours of the Korean Cultural Center in Budapest for free of charge.
