On May 19, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York held a conference at Syngman Rhee Hall at Princeton University in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the ROK-US alliance in collaboration with the Korea Society, a non-profit organization based in New York. Attended by professors, students, key figures from think tanks, and the next generation of Korean Americans, the conference consisted of two sessions: Session 1, “The US-Republic of Korea Alliance after 70 Years: Legacy and Trajectory,” and Session 2, “The Role of Korean-Americans in the Dynamic ROK-US Relationship.”

Consul General Euy Whan Kim highlighted the evolution of the ROK-US alliance. Beginning as a defense pact for a young Korea, it has become a multi-faceted partnership encompassing politics, economics, science, and culture. The alliance now stands on shared values of liberal democracy and market economy, bolstering international stability.

The ROK-US alliance has been vital for the Korean Peninsula’s stability and the Republic of Korea’s rise to a top 10 global economy. Consul General Kim credited President Seungman Lee’s vision and diplomacy as foundational to the alliance’s inception.

Prominent attendees at this event included Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin (video message), Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey, Vice President Hwang Kyu-jung of Princeton University, Ellen Park, Member of the New Jersey House of Representatives, and Susan Elliott, President of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP).
