Events at KCCs abroad

The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA), in partnership with the San Diego Museum of Art(SDMA), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea(MMCA), Korean Culture and Information Service(KOCIS), proudly present a special exhibition, "Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images". The exhibition is taking place from October 28th, 2023 - March 3rd, 2024 at the San Diego Museum of Art.

The exhibition sheds light on the use of color in Korean painting-known as polychrome painting (‘chaesaekhwa’)-and its role in Korean culture. This is the U.S Debut of the exhibition at The San Diego Museum of Art after the display at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon in South Korea (MMCA).

Exploring the continued influence of polychrome painting and its legacy of auspicious imagery, the exhibition showcases contemporary works in dialogue with historical masterpieces. Over 50 works of art are on display, including paintings, videos, and installations, many of which have never been shown in the United States before. There are four different sections in the exhibition, each focused on a core element of traditional Korean painting: ‘Byeoksa’, protection from evil spirits, ‘Gilsang’, good fortune, ‘Gyohun’, edification, and ‘Gamsang’, appreciation. The visitors can see precious art works and witness the importance of art in everyday Korean life across four themes at the Korea in Color.
