In celebration of our 30th anniversary, the Mook Hyang Calligraphy Society proudly presents works of current and former members in an exhibition entitled "Brush Strokes with Emotions: An Exhibition of Traditional and Modern Calligraphy". The exhibition will feature traditional as well as modern calligraphy works.
The traditional calligraphy works are based on rules of either one or a combination of the five different styles of Chinese characters such as Seal script, Clerical script, Cursive script, Regular script and Semi-cursive script and four styles of Korean characters such as Print script, Royal Court script, Semi-print script and Common People script.
The modern calligraphy works will be more liberated from the rigid rules of traditional scripts. A work may not even be legible since emphasis is given more on representing aesthetic expression. What it means is that as artists try to depict the aesthetic aspect of their chosen characters they may convey meaning even without the use of words.
As they create works with rich emotional and spiritual expression, they are in a realm beyond the rules of traditional calligraphy. In addition the modern calligraphy utilizes not only the traditional black ink, but may include a variety of colors normally seen in western painting. Instead of using the "Modern Calligraphy" some prefer to use "Avant-Garde Calligraphy, Art of Ink, Contemporary calligraphy and Image of Ink" to describe the trend of this new calligraphy art . The exhibition is certain to bring to viewers an appreciation of these two art forms.
