Hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong, the 8th Korean Consul General Cup Korean Speech Contest has been successfully held on 15th June, 2024. 16 finalists participated in the contest, with "The most unique Korean culture I have experienced" and "One of the most memorable moments they had" as the topic of their speech.
The participants shared a diverse range of narratives, including experiences at university festivals, funeral customs, temple stays, regional festivals, university dining halls, their time studying in Korea, and the courage to participate in the speaking contest.
First prize winner, Cheng Wing Ling Dorcas
Out of the finalists, 5 winners were selected: 1st place went to Cheng Wing Ling Dorcas (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) for her presentation on "University Festivals in Korea", 2nd place to Lee Yan Tung (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) for "The Courage to Participate in the Speaking Contest", 3rd place to Leung Nim Yan (secondary school teacher) for "The Culture of Affection in Korea" and Yuen Rachel (general learner) for "Korean Food Culture", and 4th place to Yau Yuen Ying (general learner) for "Temple Stays".

Apart from cash prize, the 1st and 2nd place winners will receive the opportunity to participate in the "King Sejong Institute Training Program for Excellent learners" hosted by the King Sejong Institute Foundation, while the 3rd and 4th place winners will be sponsored with round-trip tickets between Hong Kong and Korea, provided by Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, and the Korea Tourism Organization Hong Kong Branch.
Mr.Yoo Hyungcheol, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, stated that with Korean language being included in the Hong Kong university entrance examinations starting next year, he expects more primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong to adopt Korean as a regular subject, and that the Consulate, KCC and other Korean organizations in Hong Kong will continue to provide support to enable more Hong Kong students to learn Korean.
