Korean Cultural Service NY: “Strata of Time: The Layers of Tradition” Gallery Opening and Reception
Strata of Time: The Layers of Tradition features the work of four contemporary artists of Korean background active in the United States: Bongsang Cho, Sei-ryun Chun, Jiyoung Chung, and Sangjoon Park. Inspired by the high level of craftsmanship that dwells within the deep-rooted culture of Korea, the four artists have reinterpreted traditional techniques into modern forms. The very foundations of their artworks lie in their affection and respect for traditional Korean art. Building from this, layer by layer, these four artists have created works that transcend limitations of both time and space. Their works lie in the break between yesterday and today, the traditional and contemporary. Three of the artists featured in this exhibition, Bongsang Cho, Jiyoung Chung, and Sangjoon Park have been selected to be included in the prestigious Smithsonian Craft Show, contributing to the visibility of Korean art and artists in the US and internationally.
(Additionally, there was a special Korean tea demonstration by Sei-ryun Chun)
Bong-sang Cho's art pieces
have been on display at the Smithsonian Museum and the Philadelphia Museum. He
has also been recognized as the "Best Modern Artist" at the North
Virginia Art Festival.
Sei-ryun Chun has actively took part in many
gallery exhibitions in New York, Miami, and San Francisco. She is currently the
Executive Director of Oms Art Gallery in Fort Lee.
Ji-young Chung is recognized worldwide for her
beautiful artwork with hanji (traditional Korean paper). Her works were invited
to exhibitions in Finland, Canada, Australia, France, China, and England.
Sang-joon Park was awarded as the "Best
Artist" at the Smithsonian Craft Show, which is the most competitive craft
show. He is currently teaching ceramics at BRIC Arts Media House.
