Events at KCCs abroad

The Korean Cultural Centre SA in Pretoria hosted a groundbreaking cultural event, introducing South African audiences to the profound artistry of Park Soo Keun, one of Korea's most celebrated modern artists. This two-day event, held on 22 and 23 November, marked a significant step in fostering cross-cultural appreciation and dialogue through art.

The centerpiece of the event was an immersive workshop, featuring a thought-provoking lecture on the life and legacy of Park Soo Keun, fondly known as Korea's 'National Painter.' Participants delved into Park's artistic journey, gaining insight into how his work reflected the resilience and spirit of the Korean people during challenging historical periods, including the Japanese occupation, liberation, and the Korean War.

In addition to the lecture, participants engaged in a hands-on art session that brought Park's distinctive techniques and themes to life. Using textured mediums and muted tones reminiscent of Park's signature style, attendees had the opportunity to create their own artworks inspired by his legacy.

“Park Soo Keun’s work is not only a testament to the power of art to capture the soul of a nation but also a bridge connecting different cultures,” said Jiyoel You, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre. “Through this event, we hope to build a deeper understanding and appreciation of Korean modern art among South African audiences.”

Participants expressed awe and admiration for Park's ability to portray the beauty of ordinary lives and his commitment to preserving the essence of Korean identity through his art.

This event underscores the Centre's mission to promote Korean culture and foster meaningful connections between Korea and South Africa. By showcasing the timeless work of Park Soo Keun, the Centre not only highlighted the rich heritage of modern Korean art but also inspired South African participants to explore the universality of human experiences through creative expression.

This event was organized in partnership with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea.
