The
National Korean Studies Seminar offers the most
comprehensive program for K-12 educators about Korean history and culture and
the Korean American experience in the United States. It is one of only two
national programs focused on Korean history and culture and outstanding educators
from twenty
seven states have been selected to participate in
the week-long seminar free seminar since 2004.
The June 23-27 Seminar on Korean History and Culture is free to all that
attend for five days and will retain the most successful components of past
five-day seminars. In 2014, the seminar will be in greater depth and scope in
terms of coverage of Korean history, art, literature and music. The seminar
will also respond to the Common Core and the need for ready-made lessons for
teachers of Regular, Honors and Advanced Placement World and United States
History classes. Lectures will be closely tied to required classroom
instruction.
The schedule includes coverage on Korean history (ancient, medieval,
modern), economic/political development, , reunification issues of Korean
Peninsula, and current
developments in East Asia, such as concerns about recent developments in
North Korea and the possible implications for South Korea, China and Japan. It also covers cultural
components such as literature, music (traditional and contemporary), K-POP, film, food , art, martial arts, philosophy, , religion, and IT
industry of technology, Speakers will explain how the
distinctive features of Korean art, literature, martial arts, music, religion
and philosophy compare with that of China and Japan.
Lectures will be given
by prominent scholars from Stanford, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and California State
University. Participants will create
rhythmic sounds on Korean drums, perform taekwondo techniques, create folk art
that reflects ancient tradition, visit a Korean Buddhist temple, witness and
beautiful traditional tea ceremony and explore Friendship Bell in San Pedro. The program includes breakfast, lunch, parking, books,
lessons, and DVDs. LAUSD teachers will receive one salary point for attending
all sessions. USC Continuing Education Credit is an
option.
The National Korean Studies Seminar offers a vital academic program and
is the only program on Korean history and culture and the Korean American
experience that is organized by classroom teachers. Sung Kim (Director) and I
(Advisor) have a combined experience in the field of education and have
successfully organized over 10 years of seminars and workshops on Korea throughout the United States.
We have created successful K-12 lessons and our own Power Point lectures over a
period of ten years.
The National Korean Studies Seminar will continue to maintain the high
standards established in the past and will honor all that attend in the
Confucian tradition. This year we will be offering a out of state workshop in Tucson, Arizona because Korean Cultural Center
and NKSS want to expand this prominent workshop on Korea throughout the
nation. In the workshop, KCC and NKSS
will collaborate Tucson Unified School District in Arizona. The Arizona workshop will be scheduled in
October 10th, 2014.
