Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Korean National Liberation

The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA, Director Sangwon Jung), in collaboration with the National Academy of Arts, Republic of Korea (NAA, President Soojung Shin), presented a special exhibition marking the 80th Anniversary of Korean National Liberation.

Held for the first time in Los Angeles, the exhibition showcases 20 works by members of the Korean Academy of Arts, including pieces by renowned masters such as the late Whanki Kim and Kyungja Chun. The exhibition features a diverse range of genres including Korean painting, Western painting, sculpture, and crafts.

The opening ceremony was attended by over 120 distinguished guests from the Korean-American cultural and arts community, including Soojung Shin, President of the Korean Academy of Arts; Euisoon Choi, Head of the Academy’s Fine Arts Division; member Taijung Um; Virginia Moon, Associate Curator at LACMA; Rody Lopez, Director of Craft Contemporary; Yun Sun Jeonn, President of the KAASC; Alex Kim, President of the PSSC; and Gloria Lee, President of KAFA.

President Sujeong Shin remarked, “This marks the first time that works by Korea’s most distinguished senior artists will be presented in Los Angeles. I hope this exhibition allows local art enthusiasts and the Korean-American community to fully experience the passion and artistic vision of these masters, who have upheld the traditions of Korean art while forging their own creative paths.”

This exhibition serves not only as an opportunity to share the beauty and value of Korean art with the Southern California public, but also as a catalyst for deeper cultural exchange through the arts. In particular, it offers a meaningful moment to reflect on the identity and future of Korean art in honor of the 80th anniversary of liberation, while providing a rare chance to explore the legacy of Korea’s master artists alongside the works of current Academy members.
The exhibition will remain on view through May 15 at the 2nd floor Art Gallery of the KCCLA.
