On May 5, 2025, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration's commitment to transforming Nigeria's basic education sector through technology. This announcement was made by UBEC's Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, during a media briefing in Abuja ahead of the 2025 International Conference on Smart Education and Digital Literacy (ICSE 2025). The conference, scheduled for May 6–9 in Abuja, is jointly organized by UBEC and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), with the theme "Empowering African Smart Education Through Emerging Technologies."
Garba highlighted that the Federal Government, through UBEC, has established over 36 Smart Schools across Nigeria, each equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, advanced technology, and content studios staffed by teachers skilled in using technology for teaching and learning. She emphasized the need to equip basic schools with the necessary infrastructure for a smart education system, aiming to provide equitable access to quality education across all regions, including rural, semi-urban, and urban areas.
KOICA Country Director, Kim Eunsub, expressed South Korea’s support for Nigeria’s smart education journey through the KOICA Smart School Initiative in collaboration with UBEC. He noted that the initiative had already facilitated the construction of state-of-the-art Smart Schools, the training of teachers and administrators, and the sharing of learning resources. Plans for a second phase of the project are set to begin in 2026.
