In November 2021, NIMASA (Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency) and the Korea Coast Guard signed a 5‑year MoU—renewable for another term—covering maritime security, safety, information sharing, training, search-and-rescue, and a direct communication hotline.
The agreement builds on Nigeria’s Deep Blue Project, which has significantly reduced piracy in the region, and aims to further strengthen Gulf of Guinea security, critical for shipping and fishing industries .
Korean support includes patrol vessel donations, shipbuilding and maintenance training, and maritime capacity development. These efforts align with broader Nigerian initiatives like NIMASA-Navy collaborations.
The improved maritime security also supports bilateral trade—between Nigeria and South Korea, trade surged to $2.2 billion in 2024, a 38.6 percent increase, underscoring economic interdependence.
