Combining dramatic vocal performance, rhythmic drumming, and expressive narration, pansori is a deeply emotional and culturally rich art form that has captivated audiences for centuries.
Over three days, participants will learn the basics of pansori vocal techniques, rhythmic patterns, and the storytelling spirit that defines this traditional performance art. No prior experience is needed—just bring your voice and curiosity!
Whether you’re a performer, singer, or simply passionate about world cultures, this is a rare chance to experience Korea’s soulful sound tradition—right here in Pretoria.
PANSORI
Pansori is a traditional Korean genre of musical storytelling performed by a vocalist and a drummer. The singer uses a powerful, expressive voice to narrate long epic tales, often filled with humor, tragedy, and moral lessons, while the drummer provides rhythm and commentary. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, pansori is celebrated for its emotional depth, artistic improvisation, and deep roots in Korean folklore.
