The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) is actively promoting Afrobeat–Korean traditional music fusion to deepen cultural ties between Nigeria and South Korea. At the “K‑Pop Meets Korean Traditional Music” exhibition in Abuja, KCCN Director Jeon Ju Ho called on Nigerians to collaborate by showcasing Nigerian musical heritage in Korea and embracing Korean instruments and sounds in Nigerian music. He noted that many Nigerians are enthusiastic K‑Pop fans yet remain unfamiliar with the traditional Korean roots that underpin the genre.
The exhibition, co-hosted with the National Gugak Center and under Korea’s 2025 Touring K‑Arts Program, featured traditional costumes and instruments such as gayageum, yonggo, jing, taepyeongso, and masks, illustrating their connection to modern K‑Pop. Jeon highlighted that no significant collaborations between Afrobeat and Korean traditional music have occurred so far and expressed excitement about the potential for creative fusion—describing it as an “exciting prospect” that cultural institutions and governments support. The initiative underscores KCCN’s strategy to use music to bridge cultures and cultivate innovative, people-centered cultural diplomacy.
