Events at KCCs abroad

The Korean Cultural Centre Australia presents Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds, a compelling exhibition that explores the creative force behind the visual identity of contemporary Korean cinema. In partnership with the Korean Film Archive, this special showcase runs from August 14 to October 31 and highlights the groundbreaking work of production designers Ryu Seong-hee (Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden), Cho Hwa-sung (Hansan: Rising Dragon), and Han Ah-reum (Kill Boksoon, Kingmaker).

Audiences are invited to explore behind-the-scenes materials—ranging from early concept art to intricate set blueprints—that reveal how these visual storytellers transform scripts into immersive cinematic worlds. Each featured work reflects a unique artistic vision and demonstrates how production design shapes mood, meaning, and emotional resonance in film.

The exhibition also offers a historical lens, tracing how Korean production design evolved from the early 1990s—when assistant directors handled most visual tasks—to the establishment of Korea’s formal art direction system with Blue in You (1992). Today, as Korean cinema garners global acclaim, production design plays a central role in achieving the level of visual sophistication audiences expect, earning international honors such as the Vulcan Award at Cannes.

Supported by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and KOFICE as part of the “Touring K-Arts” project, the exhibition celebrates the rising global profile of Korean film and the artists who build its unforgettable on-screen worlds.
