Act 1
A rural village on the banks of the Rhine River - A tragic love story begins
In a peaceful Rhineland village, Hilarion, a gamekeeper, enters bringing flowers for Giselle. Soon,
Albrecht, the Duke of Silesia, also in love with Giselle, appears, removing the cloak and sword which betray his nobility and revealing himself disguised as a peasant. Meeting Albrecht, Giselle plucks the petals from a daisy to test his love; her fears are confirmed when they tell her "He loves me not." Seeing them together, Hilarion plans a jealous revenge.
Giselle and Albrecht celebrate the grape harvest with the villagers, and Giselle's mother reminds her that overexertion will tax her weak heart, causing her to die before her wedding day and join the Wilis who haunt the woods at night. A hunting party from the nearby castle comes through the village for rest and refreshments, and Bathilde, daughter of the Prince of Courland, gives Giselle her necklace after the two confide to each other that they are both engaged to be married.
Finally, Giselle learns that Bathilde's fiancé is none other than her Albrecht, and that he has indeed been lying to her. This revelation deprives Giselle of her reason; finally her weak heart gives out and she drops dead to the ground. Hilarion blames Albrecht for Giselle's death.
Act 2
A woodland glade beside a shadowy lake - love that goes beyond death
Visiting Giselle's grave, Hilarion is frightened by ghostly creatures, and runs away. Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis, comes into the clearing and summons her subjects to call forth their new initiate, the ghost of Giselle.
Albrecht arrives with white lilies for Giselle's grave. Her ghost appears near the grave, and they recall their love and share some tender moments together.
The Wilis appear in pursuit of Hilarion, then force him to dance to his death. A short time later the vengeful Wilis reappear with Albrecht, and Myrtha announces that he, too, is doomed.
Giselle intercedes for Albrecht, but she is forced by Myrtha's order to lead him in a dance of death. Pushed to deathly exhaustion by the relentless Wilis, Albrecht falls to the ground, but the strength of Giselle's love has overcome even the Wilis' dark powers and he manages to hang onto his life until a distant bell tolls the break of day, and his life is spared. He watches Giselle return to her grave.
