On August 31, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York hosted a special lecture titled “Exploring the Past Through Archives: Minister Allen’s Papers at the New York Public Library,” featuring Hee Kwon Yoo, a librarian at the New York Public Library (NYPL). Yoo introduced the history and major collections of the NYPL and provided insights into the social and diplomatic landscape of late 19th-century Korea through the diaries and documents of Horace Newton Allen (1858–1932), preserved in the library’s archives.
The lecture also highlighted the NYPL’s Korean-related historical materials and digital collections, underscoring the significance of preserving Korean historical records overseas and the vital role of archives in understanding the past. Concluding with the message “Carpe Diem” (Seize the Day), Yoo emphasized the importance of exploring historical records, sharing knowledge, and passing cultural heritage on to future generations.
The Consulate General reaffirmed its commitment to identifying and showcasing Korean historical and cultural materials preserved in the New York area. Through continued lectures and cultural initiatives, the Consulate aims to promote greater awareness of Korean history and culture while strengthening historical and cultural understanding between Korea and the United States.
