Exhibition “Haenyeo: Women of the Sea” at the Göteborg Maritime Museum
Opening Ceremony of “Haenyeo: Women of the Sea” at the Göteborg Maritime Museum The exhibition “Haenyeo: Women of the Sea” is being held at the Göteborg Maritime Museum(exhibition period: March 3 to September 14). This exhibition is about the unique culture of Haenyeo(women divers) in Jeju, the biggest island of the Republic of Korea.
At the opening ceremony which took place on March 3, Ambassador Lee appreciated the importance of the exhibition as a landmark event for both the Swedish and the Koreans in Sweden to renew their perspectives about Korea and the diversity of the Korean culture, inspiring them to bring more creative cooperation and collaboration in the future. Ms. Mariya Voyvodova, Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Cultural Committee of Göteborg City also attended the opening ceremony to congratulate on the exhibition.
According to the Göteborg Maritime Museum, the exhibition has been very successful and there were more than 900 visitors to the exhibition on the day of the opening.
The exhibition “Haenyeo: Women of the Sea” consists of two main parts: the exhibition of portrait photos(by Photographer Hyung Sun Kim) and the screening of a documentary film(‘Breathing Underwater’, by Director Hee Young Ko). In 2016, UNESCO inscribed the Jeju Haenyeo culture on its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
