1. What is Spotlight Korea?

Spotlight Korea is an educational program which sends Korean traditional dancers or musicians to public schools as teaching artists during the semester.   

For the Assembly program, teaching artists will demonstrate examples of either music or dance performances for the students. For example, teaching artists for Korean dance will show Fan Dances, Small-drum Dances, and other traditional dances to students while teaching artists for Korean music will showcase Samulnori and Korean drumming.

For the Residency program, Students will learn Korean traditional dances or music for 10-12 weeks and students will be taught to perform a 3-5 minute long piece for performance at the end of the class.

Spotlight Korea holds two types of programs: Assembly and Residency.

2. How Does Spotlight Korea Work?

• The Program will run from September 2019 to March 2020

• Honorariums and transportation costs will be fully covered by the Korean Cultural Center New York.

• Eligible teaching artists of either music or dance genres will coordinate the Residency program and/or Assembly program

• Teaching artists are carefully screened and selected by the Korean Cultural Center New York.

• At the completion of the Spotlight Korea program each school year, the Korean Cultural Center New York requires the participating schools to fulfill the following:

  • 1) A final performance or presentation by the class participants reflective of what the students have learned during the program.

  • 2) Completion of an evaluation form by the school regarding the program.

  • 3) Related media (photos and videos) that the school has taken either during the duration of the program and/or at the final presentation.

4. Ineligibility Clause

• Public schools that have participated in the program for five academic school years in a row are not eligible to re-apply in the following year.

• The Korean Cultural Center New York has authority to disqualify the school from future application if:

  
  

  • The participating school fails to cooperate fully with the teaching artists

  • the participating school fails to complete the three required components at the completion of the program as noted in section 2, or

  • the Korean Cultural Center New York deems that the actions of the school are not in the best interests of either the students or the participatory parties
