This inaugural concert of 2011 brings traditional Korean music to a modern audience, Ms. Heo and Ms. Kang will perform a selection of inspiring pieces at the KCC as part of their 2011 European Tour.

Artist Bio:

HEO Yoon-jeong (Geomun-go, Korean Zither)

A master of Korean traditional music of the next generation, Ms. Heo Yoon-jeong is an active geomun-go soloist and composer. Her talents cut across various musical genres, expanding the possibilities of geomun-go and Korean music by bringing together different genres ranging from traditional music, improvisational music, and contemporary music.

She learned the geomun-go Sanjo under the living treasure, Han Kap-deuk and she has since been designated official successor of the Intangible Asset #16. She received, KBS Grand Prize of Korean Traditional Music Award 2009, Meritorious Citation/ ROK Ministry of Culture, Sport, Tourism 2008, 2007-2008 Artist Residence Fellowship of Rockefeller Foundation “'Asian Cultural Council New York”.

Ms. Heo has held thirteen solo recitals from 1998 to 2009, performed with numerous groups and festivals among them with the German artist Stephan Micus, the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Korean National Traditional Orchestra, Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra, Rudolstadt World Music Festival and tours to Germany, England, France, the U.S. Japan and Poland.

 

KANG Kwon-soon (Jeongga, Traditional Vocals)

Kang Kwon Soon is a leading vocalist in traditional and contemporary music in Korea.

She has devoted herself to performing and perfecting both Korean traditional court music(jeongga) as well as contemporary music. She has performed extensively throughout Korea and abroad, working with many composers, dancers ensembles and orchestras, including the National Orchestra, KBS Traditional Orchestra, Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra and Kim Duk-soo Samulnori Group.

She has also been cast in performances directed by such international art directors as Ong Keng Sen, Kim Jin-hi and Chen Shi-Zeng, working with traditional and contemporary artists from around the world. Ms. Kang has participated in the Melbourne Arts Festival, the 50th Anniversary of Korea’s Liberation, Young Musicians Festival and the Korea Festival.

Ms. Kang has released the first jeongga album, “Sounds of Heaven,” in 2004, recording with Samulnori group, and has received a number of prizes in competitions such as the Dong-A Competition and the Seoul Traditional Music Festival sponsored by Korean Broadcasting System (KBS).
