We Mean Business, 2019

AREA: Coal Drops Yard & Cubitt Square & COS, Stable St, Kings Cross, London N1C 4DQ, UK

TIME: 5pm-12am

TYPE: Installation, Moving Image, Sound

ABOUT THE WORK

Christine Sun Kim has collaborated with students at Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children in King’s Cross to create a series of site specific commissions. This includes a multi-channel video installation in Coal Drops Yard exploring how experiences of deafness shape understandings of language and culture; a durational sound piece at the new COS concept store made with musician and producer Matt Karmil, a short animation screened at Regent’s Canal and a text-based ‘declaration’ championing and celebrating the benefits of sign language on the hoarding at Lewis Cubitt Square.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Christine Sun Kim explores the conceptual aspect of sound by connecting it to acts of drawing, painting and performance. By combining aspects of musical notation, body language and American Sign Language (ASL) she expands the communicative potential of such information systems and in turn invents a grammatical structure for her own compositions. Kim uses a variety of media to provide critical commentary on translations between ASL and English, to deconstruct preconceived ideas around sound and language and interrogate how linguistic authority influences perception.

ABOUT THE VENUE

Coal Drops Yard is a new shopping and dining district in King’s Cross. Located within a reimagined set of historic buildings and arches directly adjacent to Granary Square and Regent’s Canal, Coal Drops Yard houses over fifty stores from a unique mix of established and emerging brands, along with cafés, bars, top independent restaurants and new public spaces.
