La Mer et L'Île, which has been raising awareness of the East Sea and Dokdo Island through classical music, fine arts and literature will be co-hosting with Korean Cultural Center in Italy its sixth special exhibition on the Korea’s Sea and Island from 27 November 2019 to 31 December 2019 at the Korean Cultural Center in Rome. The opening ceremony followed by reception will be held at 6:30PM on 27 November 2019.
La Mer et L'Île is a non-profit arts and sciences society established by Korea’s 100 renowned artists and scholars in 2013 to promote Korea’s classical music, visual arts and literature to outside as well as inside of Korea. It also aims to raise awareness of Korea’s East Sea and Dokdo Island through cultural activities. La Mer et L'Îlians explore Korea’s eastern-most Dokdo Island every spring. They compose, play music, write poems, choreograph dances, and hold exhibitions on Dokdo and the East Sea through exploring, and being inspired by Korea’s most beautiful island and its surrounding sea. They have held, thus far, several such exhibitions on this landscape as “Dokdo, Island of Five Senses”, “The Real Landscape of Korea- Dokdo and Ulleungdo ”, and “The Aesthetics of Dodo” in Korea and Shanghai, China.
At this exhibition, 8 renowned Korean painters such as Yongsun Suh, Sun-doo Kim, Byung-wook Oh, Chong-song Lee, Tae-im Ha, Joo-yeon Lee, Hyun-joo Jang, Il-young Jeong will be participating. This exhibition is expected to be a meaningful and inspiring one, since they express the sublime beauty of the landscape of the East Sea and Dokdo, and transcended them to the aesthetics as homage to Korea’s nature.
In addition, La Mer et L'Île as the leading K-classical ensemble, has performed classical, romantic, and contemporary repertoires in and out of Korea. It has also commissioned new works on the theme of Dokdo and the East Sea to Korea’s renowned composers, and has performed these works. It has held overseas concerts successfully at 13 world cultural cities such as Paris, New York, Amsterdam, Prague, Hong Kong, Toronto, Singapore, Sydney and St. Petersburg to much acclaim by audiences and critics alike.
Mr. Hamjoon Lee, CEO & Founder of La Mer et L'Île, has explained its rationale as follows;
“Dokdo and the East Sea would become part and parcel of Korea’s culture, and be sublimated to Korea’s Sea and Island by cultural activities such as the performances, exhibitions and expressions thereof through classical music, visual arts, dances and poetry.”
In addition to the leading K-classical ensemble, La Mer et L'Île is also expected to be a leading K-arts society which promotes Korea’s beautiful landscape and nature through visual arts.
