The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. Yaloo will feature four of the artist's single channel video works: Sebum Coach, New Year Parade, New Millennium Workout Routine, and Korea Workout Routine.

As an artist, Yaloo explores contemporary consumer culture and symbolism in the context of her Asian cultural heritage, rooted in her experiences and attitude acquired while living abroad. She experiments with the infinite possibilities of multimedia by mixing various technology-based forms such as single channel video, media facades, projection mapping, digital textiles, and virtual reality applications. Yaloo utilizes technical and artistic skills to combine witty imagery and motion that invite viewers into the ultimate imaginative space. This self-titled exhibition also aims to provide a positive energy and comfort to those affected and exhausted by the effects of a global pandemic.

The 2020 Korean Media Art Series will offer cutting edge art to the public during a time of limited in-person events, highlighting a diversity of works by accomplished Korean multimedia artists throughout the remainder of the year. K-Art at Home: Yaloo will release online on September 4 at 6 p.m. and be viewable on the KCCDC website at http://washingtondc.korean-culture.org through September 24.

[About the Artist]

With the inseparable influence of her Asian heritage and the mind of habitual tourist, Yaloo creates technically rich, visually extravagant works that deal with the images of contemporary culture. Yaloo embraces experimentation in her video installations, which encompass single channel video, media façades, projection mapping sculptures, digital textiles, and virtual reality applications. Her works lead audiences to an immersive digital experience reminiscent of a theme park. She has participated in numerous international artist residencies, specializing in creating media art in unique situations and circumstances. Through the process of developing large-scale cross-media projects in Asia and America, Yaloo’s one-of-a-kind visual treatment of normally mundane imagery and her experimental use of new technology have synergized with local communities and non-art industry professionals, inspiring friendly conversations on a range of important contemporary issues.

Yaloo (full name: Ji Yeon Lim) received her BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago focusing on video installation. She is a fellowship recipient from the Asia Cultural Center (Korea), Headlands Art Center (United States), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), La Bande Vidéo (Canada), Western Front Society (Canada), Bemis Studio Art Center (United States), and Vermont Studio Art Center (United States). She was the first recipient of Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Fellowship from Video Data Bank. She was selected as the Gold Prize Winner at the 13th Contemporary Visual Art Awards from the AHL Foundation (2016, New York) and her works have been presented in numerous solo, group, and festival exhibitions, including Manif d’Art Quebec City Biennale (Canada) and the Biennale de L’Image Possible (Belgium).
