The Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles(KCCLA) and the Korea Academy for Educators(KAFE) hosted the Five days workshop on Korean history and culture and the Korean American experience on August 1st to August 5th, 2011.
It is one of only two national programs focused on Korean history and culture and the Korean American experience. Over 200 individuals applied to attend the eighth annual seminar this year and sixty-nine educators have been selected to participate. Twenty eight outstanding teachers from thirteen states (Arizona, California (San Diego, San Francisco), Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas) have been selected to participate on fellowships to attend the week-long seminar. Lectures were be given by prominent scholars from Stanford, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and USC and an award-winning Korean American author. More than twenty speakers and performers will be involved in the seminar program. Participants were created rhythmic sounds on Korean drums, performed taekwondo techniques, created folk art that reflects ancient tradition, visited a Korean Buddhist temple, witness a beautiful traditional tea ceremony, and explore Koreatown.
The seminar includes lectures on Korean history and culture and provides greater understanding of Korean American students and their families. Attendees were received excellent free resources and instructional materials for their classroom. Teachers were also honored according to the precepts of Confucian tradition.
