[Seoul Gayageum Ensemble]

Seoul Gayageum Ensemble consists of musicians studying for a master’s degree at College of Music, Seoul National University. It has continued its musical exploration since its establishment in September, 2016. The ensemble seeks various paths for musical growth of its members by searching into academic and profound aspects of music such as unconventional beats, complex rhythms, atonal scales and other contemporary music techniques, and performs a diversity of musical works which has not received public recognition.

[Work Description] 

The Labyrinth / composed by Donald Reid Womack

The Labyrinth is full of surprising features such as numerous twists, elusive starting points, unexpected turns, circulating passages, complex rhythms and confusing sentiments. Four gayageums play complicated melodies to depict a labyrinth while maintaining symmetry and balance, which end up blending into an integrated voice rushing toward the exit of the maze, the final destination.
