The Man Who Laughs," the first musical to win three honors at the Korean Musical Awards, opened in Seoul on June 10 at the Sejong Center.
The musical is based on the novel of the same title by the 19th century French writer, Victor Hugo (well-known for works such as
Les Miserables and
The Hunchback of Notre Dame). Set in 17th-century England, the musical is about Gwynplaine, a boy whose mouth is made into a perpetual grin by Comprachicos, a criminal group that disfigures children.
Led by the itinerant carnival vendor dealer Ursus, Gwynplaine joins a traveling troupe with blind girl Dea and becomes the most famous clown in Europe. His fame, however, soon leads him to corruption and confusion.
The musical will run through Aug. 22 and admission is open to people age 8 or over.
