The play "Shakespeare in Love," which commemorates the 30th anniversary of Seoul Arts Center, has opened at the center's CJ Towol Theater.
Based on the 1998 film of the same title, the work originated from the whimsical idea that "Romeo and Juliet" was inspired by William Shakespeare's own love affair. In 1999, the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture as well as those in six other categories. The same year, it also won three Golden Globes, four British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, and the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Based on the strength of the original film, the play was hailed for its popularity and cinematic quality after its premiere in 2014 at London's West End, further spreading throughout the world like the U.S., Canada, Japan and South Africa.
