Musical 'Hero'

The Korean Empire in 1909 is on the verge of losing its sovereignty to Japan. Ahn Jung-geun, 30, and his pro-independence comrades gather in the Far East Russian province of Primorsky Krai, each cutting off a finger and swearing an oath to champion Korean independence.

Hirobumi Ito, the first Japanese resident-general of Korea, returns to Japan after finishing his term. To speak to a Russian official, he heads to Harbin, then Russian territory before becoming a Chinese city in 1946. After hearing that Ito is going to Harbin, Ahn plans to assassinate him there. Ahn shoots his target seven times at Harbin Station on Oct, 26, 1909.

Premiering in 2009, this musical based on the martyr Ahn's life celebrated its 15th anniversary on June 4 this year. The work inspired a film version released in December 2022 and marked its millionth admission in March last year, becoming just the second domestic musical to surpass that mark after "The Last Empress," which debuted in 1955.
