Starting in 1977, the Jeondong Theater opened with performances of traditional Korean dance and music, delighting audiences of all ages. Years later in 2008, the show was named ‘Miso’ and adapted into a traditional dance drama/love story chronicling the four seasons of Korea. The story continued to evolve and in 2010 creators unveiled a new plotline, filled with love and jealousy accompanied by the proud and beautiful tradition of Korean dance and music.
The 2010 version of Miso is the story of Byeon Hakdo’s intense jealousy of Chunhyang and the enduring love between Chunhyang and Monryong (based on the Korean folktale ‘Chunhyangjeon’). The heart-warming tale of the couple’s trials and triumphs is told through traditional Korean dance, Pansori (traditional vocal performance with drum), and Samulnori (traditional percussion quartet).
The saga of the two lovers is portrayed through the efforts of 80 actors and actresses, including 37 dancers, 21 instrumentalists and 13 Samulnori players. Over the past 13 years, Miso has attracted a total of approximately 550,000 people to its 3,175 showings and has been particularly well received among international fans, as an exceptional show of Korean tradition and culture. Miso has been a contributing factor in the spread ‘Korean Fever’ as worldwide audiences gain a deeper appreciation of the traditional art, beauty and elegance of Korea. In order to show ‘Miso’ in its full glory, a playhouse exclusively for the show opened in 2010.
Starting in 2010, two performances will be held daily (excluding Mondays): one at 4:00 in the afternoon and one at 8:00 at night. Interested parties can participate in ‘Janggu Class’ (Korean drum) to learn to play the drum, or the ‘Costume Program,’ which allows participants to try on traditional Korean clothing.
