Founded by Prince Elector Moritz von Sachsen in 1548, the Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the oldest orchestras in the world and is steeped in tradition. Myung-Whun Chung, principal guest conductor since the 2012-2013 season, will conduct the orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center on Nov. 19 where they will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 and No. 3, the "Eroica" symphony. This is the first time in six years for the orchestra to hold a concert in Korea, and is its fifth visit to the country.
Over its long history, many distinguished conductors have made their mark on this former court orchestra. Previous director Richard Wagner called the ensemble his "miraculous harp." Since the 2012-2013 season, Christian Thielemann has been the orchestra's principal conductor.
