Yeosu Expo can be previewed with a 3D visual map
The venue of Yeosu Expo, which is set to be unveiled to the public on May 12, can be previewed with a 3D visual map. The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM, Minister: Do-youp Kwon) and the Organizing Committee of the Yeosu Expo (Chairman: Dong-suk Kang) announced that through the MLTM's spatial information open platform "Vworld (www.vworld.kr)" from early May the entire Expo venue can be "experienced" by anyone through the service's life-like 3D features.
The official website of the Yeosu Expo, "www.expo2012.kr," offers the Vworld service through which one can take a look at 3D virtual reality venues, while other information on matters, such as exhibition halls, accommodations, and tourism can be found on the website as well.
This service is expected to offer a wide range of benefits, utilizing Korea's cutting-edge spatial information technologies and IT prowess, so that anyone who has access to the Internet can experience the virtual reality of the 3D rendering of the Expo venues on computer screens. This service will enable the entire 7 billion world population, regardless of their locations, be it Antarctica and Africa, could be joined in one unity to be swept away by the wonder of the Yeosu Expo.
The Vworld, which has been in service from January this year, is based on 3D visual technologies that can show the actual venue in its vivid 3D form, complete with all the exact details. This cutting-edge service was first used at the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit in March this year for the purpose of providing security services to the heads of state and government attending the Summit, and since has been drawing acclaim as the next generation core spatial information service.
In order to successfully support the Yeosu Expo, which will be held under the theme of "The Living Ocean and Coast", the MLTM plans to offer the Vworld service in six different categories, including the Expo venue bird's eye view, Expo venue tour, Expo exhibition tour, accommodations information, surrounding tourist attraction information, and major location scenery views.
First, the Expo venue bird's eye view is a function where the user can have an overall view of the Expo venue while flying around the area like a bird using the 3D virtual reality; the Expo venue tour and Expo exhibition tour are services that provide various contents, including video and 3D images of the exhibition information along with information on diverse facilities, which can be viewed online at the Expo's official portal website, without having to visit the actual Expo itself.
Accommodations information and surrounding tourist attraction information provide information in a 3D format about major accommodations facilities and popular tourist attractions around the Yeosu Expo area, so that visitors can view such information as regional locations and surrounding sceneries in a life-like 3D format.
The Vworld service is offered in both Korean and English languages, which makes it easier for foreigners who are interested in the Expo to find more information, promoting Korea's cutting-edge spatial information technologies at the same time on the global stage.
This service came into being at the request of the Expo Organizing Committee that was exploring innovative ways to promote the Yeosu Expo, which was combined with active support provided by the MLTM.
The MLTM and the Organizing Committee plan to strengthen the service's functions and contents while updating its information based on close cooperation that would be continued till the last day of the Expo so that this 3D virtual reality service can be helpful to the actual Expo information provision and promotion.
In addition, the MLTM plans to actively support the cutting-edge 3D spatial information service by applying it to large scale international events, including the Asian Games Incheon and Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, based on its know-how derived from successful operation assistance of this service on a serious of important international events, such as the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit and Yeosu Expo
