The Ministry of Environment (Minister Kim Wansup) announced that to successfully host the 54th World Environment Day event, jointly held by the Korean government and the United Nations Environment Programme (Secretary-General Inger Andersen) from June 2 to 5 in 2025 in Jeju, it will establish a ‘World Environment Day Commemorative Event Preparation Task Force (TF)’ on March 4.

World Environment Day (June 5 every year) is the world’s largest environmental event, attended by key figures from various countries, representatives from international organizations, businesses, and representatives from global civic organizations, affirming the collective efforts of the international community.

The task force will be led by Lee Hyeong-seop, Director for the International Cooperation Division of the Ministry of Environment, and will include participation from relevant departments and agencies to plan and execute the event more comprehensively and systematically, while ensuring a swift progress.

This year’s World Environment Day event, themed “Beat Plastic Pollution,” will prepare a variety of activities to enable approximately 2,000 participants from both domestic and international backgrounds, including existing domestic events such as Environmental Education Week and Green Consumption Week, as well as international organization forums, art competitions, and youth forums.

During the World Environment Day commemorative ceremony, a “Declaration of Action” will be announced to inspire global citizens to take action against plastic pollution. Based on this, it is planned to submit a resolution at the 7th UN Environment Assembly* to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, in December this year.

* The UN Environment Programme’s highest decision-making body that reviews and decides on major environmental issues, policies, project plans, and budgets.

Jeong Eun-hae, Director General of International Cooperation Bureau at the Ministry of Environment, stated, “To solve the plastic problem, the actions of all sectors and stakeholders are crucial, so it is essential to encourage participation from people around the world.” She expressed, “Through this World Environment Day event, we will unite and expand the international community’s commitment to ending plastic pollution.”
