▷ Government commemorative ceremony to be held at Sejong National Arboretum on May 22 for International Day for Biological Diversity

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Kim Wansup) will hold a commemorative event for the 2025 International Day for Biological Diversity (Wetlands Day, Migratory Bird Day) on May 22 at the Sejong National Arboretum Festival Grounds (Sumogwon-ro, Sejong).

International Day for Biological Diversity is a day designated by the United Nations to commemorate May 22, the date the Convention on Biological Diversity was adopted. Since 2010, South Korea has held government-led commemorative events every year to reflect on its significance.

This year’s event, under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” has been organized to raise public awareness about the importance of biodiversity and wetlands, and to encourage national interest and action for their conservation.

※ It emphasizes the importance of promoting global awareness to drive societal change and create a sustainable future in harmony with nature.

Approximately 200 people are expected to attend the commemorative ceremony, including Minister Kim Wansup, Sejong City Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs Kim Ha-kyun, and individuals who have contributed to the conservation of biodiversity and wetlands.

The commemorative ceremony will feature a themed video screening, a congratulatory speech by the Minister, and various events including government awards.

In particular, government awards will be presented to individuals and organizations dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity, wetlands, and migratory birds, including four Presidential Citations, four Prime Minister’s Citations, and commendations from the Minister of Environment. A special performance themed “A Sustainable Ecosystem We Create Together” is also scheduled to be showcased.

As side events, various exhibitions and experience zones themed around biodiversity will be operated, including a biodiversity photo exhibition and an art display by individuals with developmental disabilities, creating an educational space that families can also enjoy.

Meanwhile, to raise public interest in biodiversity conservation, the Ministry will post information about the event on its official website (me.go.kr) and social media platforms. The commemorative ceremony will be broadcast live on the Ministry’s official YouTube channel starting at 2 p.m. on May 22.

Minister Kim Wansup stated, “Biodiversity conservation is a key solution to addressing the climate crisis and a foundation for a sustainable future.” He added, “Cooperation and action from not only the government but also businesses, local governments, and the public are essential.”
