1. The government of the Republic of Korea plans to transfer to the Afghan government the base of its provincial reconstruction team (PRT) in Charikar in the Afghan province of Parwan on December 6 and withdraw the majority of its PRT.
2. The transfer will come as the ROK government plans to gradually withdraw its PRT in line with the international community’s plan to transfer authority to the Afghan government. Even after the transfer of its base, part of the PRT will remain behind on the US military base in Bagram to continue working on its reconstruction projects at hospitals and a vocational training facility.
* Some 70 soldiers of the Oshino Unit will also stay to protect the remaining civilian personnel.
3. The ROK government set up its PRT in Afghanistan in July 2010, which has since actively conducted reconstruction projects in the sectors of public healthcare, education, agricultural and rural development, and police training, winning recognition from the Afghan people and the international community. The PRT’s accomplishments include treatment of a daily average of 300 patients, or over 100,000 in total, at two hospitals; and education of 191 people, all of whom were employed upon their completion of the education program, at the vocational training facility.
* The ROK PRT’s key reconstruction projects are as follows:
- Public healthcare: Bagram and Charikar Hospitals
- Education and training: Vocational Training Center in Bagram, Education and Cultural Center in Charikar and invitations to training programs in the ROK
- Agricultural and rural development: Construction of an agricultural school and pilot farm
- Police training: Police training center in Charikar
