Commemorative Ceremony for the 107th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea to Be Held on April 11
[Korea, April 10] The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Kwon Oh-eul) announced that it will hold a ceremony commemorating the 107th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea on the morning of April 11 at the National Memorial of the Korean Provisional Government (Uijeongwon Hall) in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, to remember the proud history of the Provisional Government, established on April 11, 1919 for the independence of the nation, and to carry forward its legitimacy and spirit.
This year’s ceremony, held under the theme “Solely, an Infinitely Beautiful Nation”, a phrase drawn from Baekbeom Ilji to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kim Koo and to reflect the Provisional Government’s enduring aspiration for national independence and a globally respected nation—will be attended by approximately 300 participants, including descendants of independence meritorious persons, key government officials, and students. The ceremony will proceed for about 40 minutes in the following order: national ceremony, reading of the Provisional Charter, commemorative address, commemorative performance, and the singing of the Song Celebrating the Establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
The Provisional Charter will be read by Kim Soo-ok, Chairperson of the Commemorative Project Association for the Korean Provisional Government and granddaughter of independence leader Kim Kyu-sik, together with Shin Min-jae, a descendant of independence activist Shin Hwa-gyun, and Choi Hyung-wook, a descendant of independence activist Choi Sang-je, reflecting the continued legacy of the independence movement.
Following the commemorative address, a special commemorative performance marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kim Koo will be presented. Actor Kim Hong-pa, who portrayed Kim Koo in the film Assassination, will deliver a solo reading performance accompanied by traditional Korean music performed by the National Gugak Center. The performance script consists entirely of excerpts from the Baekbeom Ilji.
The ceremony will conclude with all participants singing the Song Celebrating the Establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
Minister Kwon Oh-eul stated, “The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea is the legal foundation and root of the nation, having left behind invaluable legacies such as the national name, state symbols, and the democratic republican system enshrined in Article 1 of the Constitution,” adding, “I hope this commemorative ceremony will serve as a meaningful occasion for future generations and the public to remember and carry forward the noble spirit of independence of the forebears, who, despite countless hardships, played a central role in the independence movement through armed struggle, patriotic actions, and intense diplomatic efforts.”
