KFS Discusses Forest Fire Cooperation with Indonesia
- Strengthening International Cooperation in Forest Fire Prevention, Preparedness, Suppression, and Post-Fire Restoration -
The Korea Forest Service (KFS), led by Minister KIM In-ho, announced on the 4th that it held a meeting at the Government Complex Daejeon with a delegation from the Republic of Indonesia, including Mr. Thomas Nifinluri, Director of Forest Fire Management at the Ministry of Forestry, to introduce Korea’s forest disaster response policies and discuss future cooperation on forest fire management.
During their visit to Korea, the Indonesian delegation observed Korea’s advanced Forest Fire Situation Control System and response systems firsthand, and the two sides shared the view on the need to expand cooperation on forest fire response between the two countries due to climate change. In particular, the two sides exchanged opinions on the possible conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on forest fire management and post-fire restoration cooperation to promote more systematic collaboration in the forest fire sector.
The KFS has continuously strengthened the foundation for forest fire management in cooperation with the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia, including the development of the Forest and Land Fire Management System in South Sumatra, and plans to pursue a wide range of cooperative projects, such as post-fire restoration cooperation and capacity building on forest disaster management.
LEE Hyunju, Director of the International Cooperation Division, stated, "In the era of climate disasters, forest fires evolve into complex hazards that go beyond local forest damage and affect public safety, health, and the overall economy. Building on our cooperation with the Government of Indonesia, we will further strengthen global collaboration on forest fire response.”
