Takata Air Bag Recall

- 675 Jeep Cherokee, 28 Cadillac, 315 Malibu, 27,846 Captiva,

24,808 Vehicles (Renault Samsung Motors, Honda, FCA and Ford] with Tataka Air Bag -

□ The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT, Minister: YOO IL-HO) announces that it will conduct recalls on passenger vehicles imported or manufactured, and sold by FCA Korea (Inc.), General Motors Korea(Inc.), GM Korea Company(Inc.), and vehicles installed with air bags manufactured by Takata as they were found to have safety defects.

☐ An error has been found in the software of the Jeep Cherokee of FCA Korea, a local importer for Chrysler vehicles. The software error may lead to unexpected deployment of the vehicle's front·side air bags when the vehicle drives on bumpy roads.

ㅇ 675 units of the Jeep Cherokee built between September 3, 2014 and October 30, 2014 have been recalled. The owners of the said cars are advised to receive repair services (software upgrade) at FCA Korea‘s service centers free of charge from June 25, 2015.

☐ The Cadillac CTS·ATS manufactured by General Motors Korea were found to have reduced performance of the braking system, caused by ruptures in some brake pedal components (brackets** installed between the pedal and pushrod*)

* Pushrod: a device that connects a brake pedal and master cylinder (a device that generates hydraulic pressure) to deliver a driver's step on the brake to the master cylinder to stop the vehicle

** Bracket: a device connected to a brake pedal to thrust a pushrod when a driver steps on a brake.

ㅇ 18 units of the Cadillac CTS built between February 18, 2015 and March 11, 2015, and 10 units of the Cadillac ATS built between February 20, 2015 and March 4, 2015 have been recalled. The owners of the said cars are advised to receive service repairs (replacement of the entire brake pedal) at General Motors Korea‘s service centers free of charge from June 26, 2015.

☐ The Malibu of GM Korea Company was found to have defects that could give rise to incomplete deployment of the side air bag in case of vehicle crash. An error has been found in engine covers of the Captiva in which an engine room catches fire when the lower section of the engine cover touches the engine exhaust system

ㅇ 315 units of Malibu built between February 5, 2015 and March 5, 2015, 27,846 Captiva built between November 3, 2010 and May 26, 2015 have been recalled. The owners of the said cars are advised to receive service repairs (for the Malibu, air bag replacement and for Captiva, removal of the cover of the engine cover) at GM Korea Company‘s service centers free of charge from June 26, 2015.

☐ Passenger vehicles manufactured by Renault Samsung Motors, Honda Korea, FCA Korea and Ford Sales Korea that are installed with Takata air bags have been recalled due to a possible safety defect involving the air bag. The defective air bag may deploy inappropriately in the event of a crash due to excessive pressure inside, shooting metal fragments into and injuring vehicle occupants.

ㅇ 4,418 units SM3s built between February 7, 2002 and February 7, 2003, 11,044 CR-V between March 14, 2003 and December 8, 2008, 1,647 ACCORD between October 6, 2003 and June 29, 2007, 55 Dodge Durango between April 28, 2004 and December 7, 2006, 595 Dodge Dakota between October 15, 2004 and May 24, 2011, 5,672 Chrysler 300C between April 21, 2004 and June 19, 2008, and 1,377 Ford Mustang between April 6, 2004 and June 21, 2014 have been recalled. 　

ㅇ An official from MOLIT said that the ministry is confirming the recall schedule while taking into account short supply of parts caused by a worldwide recall. The owners of the recalled cars will be notified the detailed information on the recall by mails as soon as it is determined after consultation between the ministry, importers and manufactures. The ministry advises the owners of the cars to drive safe until getting recall repair services.

* May, 2015. US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recalls of 34 million vehicles affected by Takata brand air bags.
