- MSIT led the creation of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41/ WG 7 (Maritime, Underwater IoT and Digital Twin Applications)
- Professor Park Soo Hyun of Kookmin University elected as Convenor

The National Radio Research Agency (RRA) under the Ministry of Science and ICT ("MSIT"; Minister Lim Hyesook) announced that Korea led the creation of the Working Group on Maritime, Underwater IoT and Digital Twin Applications at the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41* meeting held on May 24 and June 4, 2021. Professor Park Soo Hyun of Kookmin University was elected as Convenor of the Working Group.
* Subcommittee responsible for "IoT and Digital Twin," under the Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1), which is jointly operated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electronical Committee (IEC) for international standardization of the information technology sector.

This achievement is particularly meaningful in that it has paved the way for Korea to take the lead on global standardization of maritime and underwater IoT.

This is also the fruit of Korea's efforts since 2006 when Korea began standardization of maritime and underwater IoT with Kookmin University, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO). Korea developed four global maritime and underwater IoT standards in 2018 for the first time in the world and two in 2020.

The maritime and underwater IoT sector is still a blue ocean, and the United States and European countries are accelerating their technological development in sectors such as marine resource development, aquafarming, underwater tour, underwater robots and environmental monitoring. According to a market survey report*, the average annual growth rate of the underwater IoT market is projected to reach 18.5% between 2016 and 2022.

Korea’s recent achievement in this sector is expected to play a central role in helping the country enter the marine and underwater IoT global market.

The RRA said, “Developing global standards for key technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution such as IoT, AI and data is an issue that is garnering global attention, and thus, proactive development and standardization of technlogies in the ICT sector is highly important. We will do our best to become a front-runner in global standardization in key sectors."
