Saemangeum as a strategic High-tech Industry Hub

- SDIA and ADD are establishing R&D and substantiation cluster for high-tech technology

Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency (SDIA, Administrator Kim Gyu-Hyeon) and Agency for Defense Development (ADD, president Park Jong-seung) signed an MOU for “Advanced Technology Development & Industrialization” in Saemangeum area on April 21.

Twenty officials, including Kim Gyu-Hyeon (Administrator of SDIA), Park Jong-seung (President of ADD), and Kim Kwan-young (Governor of Jeollabuk-do Province), attended the MOU signing ceremony.


SDIA and ADD are going to establish R&D and test bed to secure the competitiveness of AI and unmanned drone technology in Saemangeum through the agreement. They will also establish a high-tech cluster with related entrepreneurs, schools and institutions in Section III.

Korea government recently promotes defense industry as a strategic high-tech industry, developing high-tech materials and parts as well as manpower training which will promote future economic growth.


Following the government’s policy, ADD and SDIA are raising Saemangeum as a strategic high-tech base of defense industry, energy, ICT, and automotive industry.


SDIA will establish a strategic high-tech hub centered on New Industry* related with entrepreneurs and schools, supporting with infrastructure.


* Robotics, Artificial Intelligence Technology, high-tech materials, quantum technology, sensor, self-driving vehicle (unmanned aircraft, drone, autonomous driving etc.)

SDIA will supply more industrial sites as soon as possible in the first stage, and additional industrial complex* will be established and supplied at Section III in the second stage.
Then, R&D and test bed for high-tech technology as well as settlement support center will be established at newly established industrial complex.

For the plan, SDIA is reviewing land demand, industrial trends, and surrounding conditions with universities and entrepreneurs to establish industry-academia-R&D high-tech cluster.


Kim Gyu-Hyeon, Administrator of SDIA, said, “Recently rising as a global complex of secondary battery industry, Saemangeum Industrial Complex has set up a platform for a high-tech cluster of industry-academia-R&D. Saemangeum shall become a hub of future high-tech industry and lead national economic growth.”
