Certification of eight new marine and fisheries technologies and designation of one product for application in the first half of 2025

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced on Thursday, August 14 that it certified eight new excellent technologies (NET) in marine and fisheries for the first half of 2025. It also introduced a new system for verifying new technology products and designated one new technology product.

Since 2017, MOF has certified new technologies by evaluating the technical nature and field applicability of newly developed or innovatively improved technologies in the marine and fisheries fields. As of the first half of 2025, 150 new technologies have been certified. MOF launched a new technology application product verification system this year to support the commercialization of new technologies and designated one new technology application product.

In the first half of this year, eight new technologies were selected including▲ backscatter X-ray-based container image search system, and ▲high-density concrete manufacturing technology for marine structures using industrial byproducts such as slag and yellow clay. The Ministry also designated ▲a waste heat recovery device utilizing titanium corrugated pipes as NET.

The backscatter X-ray-based container image search system is a new technology developed through an MOF R&D project. Low-energy X-rays can distinguish low-density hazardous materials such as drugs and explosives inside cargo containers. Compared to existing technology, penetration power is improved by 57% and installation costs are reduced by 22%.

A company with NET certification receives added points when applying for R&D in marine and fisheries of a startup investment support project; it can apply for test construction when carrying out marine and fisheries construction projects. In addition, products applying NET are eligible for private contracting in public procurement in accordance with the Act on Contracts to which the state is a party and the Act on Contracts to which a local government is a party.

Companies wishing to receive NET certification in marine and fisheries and verification of products applying NET in 2025 can refer to the public notice posted on MOF’s website (www.mof.go.kr) and apply through the Marine and Fisheries Technology Evaluation System (tech.kimst.re.kr).

"We will actively support the new technology certification system so that it can become the foundation for the growth of promising companies in the marine and fisheries industry. We will lead the growth of promising companies by developing and commercializing new technologies and support the private sector in taking the lead in developing marine and fisheries science and technology," said Kim Myung-jin, Director General for Marine Policy of MOF.
