“Two Rabbits”

  • 10th anniversaryspecial exhibition

The Cultural Heritage Administration, KoreaNational University of Cultural Heritage (President Kang Kyung-Hwan)’s DesignInstitute of Cultural Commodities will hold the 10th anniversary specialexhibition Two Rabbits at Deoksugung Palace (99 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul) from the22nd to the 27th.

 

The exhibition will introduce total of 50types out of 24 product items including developments representing the past 10years of the Design Institute of Cultural Commodities and new works reflectingthe intention of the coming 10 years. Exhibition-linked seminars and Hanji(Korean Traditional Paper) Jihwa Craft (Natural Dye Craft) DIY experience willbe held together.

 

In the exhibition, 9 products that reinterpretthe Clothes Hanger (Hetdae) and SmallTable (Soban) in a modern way with the philosophy of traditional Korean house(Hanok), and 6 products that propose new uses for traditional Korean paper(Hanji) in collaboration with Hanji master craftsmen will be introduced. Inaddition, the products developed over the past 10 years from the DesignInstitute of Cultural Commodities, which have presented the value of culturalheritage as craft products, will be presented together.

 

Utilizing the palace’s hall and pavilion,developments from the past 10 years are displayed in the pavilion in front ofDeokhongjeon, products using traditional Korean paper (Hanji) are displayed atthe Haengrang of Hamnyeongjeon, and new works for year 2022 are displayedinside the hall at Deokhongjeon.

 

The entrance fee to Deoksugung Palace is 1,000won, and viewing hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Tuesday toThursday and Sunday, and extended viewing hours from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.from Friday to Saturday.

 

From the 22nd to the 27th, the Hanji (KoreanTraditional Paper) Jihwa Craft (Natural Dye Craft) DIY experience will be heldtogether. This event will be held only for those who pre-register (100 people),and the experience is free of charge. You can participate on-site after makinga reservation through the Naver reservation system (https://booking.naver.com/booking/12/bizes/466229).

 

The seminar will be held in conjunction withthe special exhibition, Two Rabbits, Tradition and Innovation will be held at the Sema Hall of the SeoulMuseum of Art at 2:30 p.m. on the 25th.

 

This seminar is to understand the phenomenonof traditional culture enjoyed by the public, and it is designed to provideinsight on the value of usage of traditional culture by examining cases ofextension of tradition as a subject of creation and quest.

 

The seminar consists of a keynote lecture and5 topic presentations. Starting with the keynote lecture by Professor Sang-JunKim of Kyung Hee University, ‘Tradition and Creation in the Transition ofCivilization: An East Asian Perspective’, followed by ‘Preservation andUtilization of Tradition for the Continuation and Expansion of K-Contents’ (byResearcher Munseon Oh of Seoul Museum of Craft Art, Curatorial ResearchInstitute), ‘Make Old Things Hip, “SongguHipsin”’ (Nara Lee, Tumblbuck OutreachManager), ‘From the Discovery of Cosmetic Relics to Their Use’ (Han-Hyung Lee,research professor at the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of KoreaNational University of Cultural Heritage), ‘Digital Era, Modern Transformationof Traditional Crafts’ (Mi-Seon Lim, Member/Curator of the Craft IndustryPromotion Committee), ‘Ultimately, Seeing Tradition is My Direction’ (YoungjinKim, Creative Director of Tchai Kim), thus 5 topic presentations are scheduled.
