For the past three decades or so, South and North Korea have exerted various efforts for exchange and cooperation to heal the old wounds left by the division and to seek ways for peaceful coexistence.

The majority of these inter-Korean talks were held at Panmunjeom, which hosted 362 of the 657 talks.

    South Korean Art Troupe Concert in Pyeongyang—Spring is Coming.

  • 2018 March 20

    A working-level meeting between South and North Korean art troupes is held at the Panmunjeom Tongil House, to discuss the South Korean art troupe’s concert in Pyeongyang. The meeting was attended by South Korean musician Yun Sang, head of the South Korean delegation, and Director of the Samjiyon Orchestra Hyun Song-wol, who headed the North Korean delegation.

    The Special Delegation to North Korea delivered President Moon Jae-in’s personal letter to Chairman Kim Jong Un. North Korea invited South Korea’s Taekwondo demonstration team and artists to Pyeongyang, to continue the mood of reconciliation and cooperation created by the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

    Pyeongchang also hosted a special exhibition featuring the findings of the Inter-Korea Joint Excavation Project for Manwoldae, Gaeseong, from February 10 to March 18.

    The two Koreas march together at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games for the first time in 11 years.

    On February 6, the 114 members of North Korean Samjiyeon Orchestra arrive at Mukho Port, South Korea, aboard the Mangyeongbongferry.The orchestra staged concerts at the Gangneung Art Center and the NationalTheater of Korea on February 8 and 11, respectively.

    North Korea’s taekwondo demonstration team visit South Korea. The team performed a demonstration at the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Taekwondo Championship held in Muju, Jeollabuk-do.

    The South and North Korean women’s soccer teams play a qualification tournament at the 2017 Women’s Soccer Asian Cup in Pyeongyang. This was the first inter-Korean match to be held in Pyeongyang in 27 years.

    The inter-Korean match of the 2017 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships takes place at the Gangneung Hockey Center.

    South Korea and North Korea hold a Special Exhibition of Artifacts Excavated from Manwoldae, Gaeseong. The exhibitions are held at the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul, South Korea, from October 13 to November 6 and at the Goryeo Museum in Gaeseong, North Korea, from October 15 to November 15.

    Starting with the first excavation survey on May 15, a total of 7 joint excavation surveys are conducted until 2015 at Manwoldae, Gaeseong, a palace site from Goryeo which had been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage.

    The 24th South-North Joint Tree-Planting Event for newlyweds is held.

    South and North Korean athletes march together during the Changchun Asian Winter Games in China. The first South-North joint march took place during the Sydney Summer Olympic Games in 2000.

  • 2005February 20

    The South-North Gyeoremal-keunsajeon Compilation Project takes off, organized by the Joint Compilation Committee. The project was aimed at compiling the vocabulary of the two Koreas based on the South’s Korean Standard Dictionary and the North’s Comprehensive Korean Dictionary. The Joint Committee held a total of 25 meetings, but the project was discontinued in 2016.

    North Korea’s Samcheolli Company participates in the season 1 production of Pororo the Little Penguin. The company produced 22 of the 52 episodes, and the show aired its first episode on November 27.

  • 1998November 3

    The Yun Isang Unification Concert is held with the participation of South Korean artists from November 3 to 5 in Pyeongyang. It was followed by the Peace and Friendship Concert and the Unification Concert in 1999.

  • 1998 May 2

    South Korea’s Little Angels hold a concert in Pyeongyang from May 2 to 12. The South-North Joint Photography Exhibition was held in the same month.

  • 1995 September

    South and North Korea exchange Hometown Visiting Groups and artist troupes. The groups crossed Panmunjeom at the same time on September 20, and the artist troupes performed folk music and dance numbers in two concerts at the Pyeongyang Grand Theater in Pyeongyang and the National Theater of Korea in Seoul, respectively.

  • 1990 December 9

    On December 9 and 10, the National Theater of Korea in Seoul host the Year-end Unification Traditional Music Concert. South Korean artists were joined by around 30 artists from North Korea, led by Deputy Chairman Sung Dong-chun of North Korea’s Korean Musicians Association.

  • 1990 October 18

    From October 18 to 23, the Pyeongyang Pan-Korean Unification Concert is held at six venues in Pyeongyang including the February 8th Culture Hall and the Bonghwa Art Theater. A 17-member traditional music group from Seoul, led by gayageum player Hwang Byung-ki, and 14 other South Korean musicians performed with North Korean musicians in Pyeongyang.

The total volume of exports from South Korea stands at USD 12.6 billion,
and the total volume of imports into the country stands at USD 12.2 billion. The two Koreas carried out 809,077 transactions.
The total number of inter-Korean cooperation projects stands at 483.

    The number of cows that Chung Joo-young, the former Honorary Chairman of Hyundai Group, sent to North Korea on June 16, 1998 The late entrepreneur crossed Panmunjeom with 50 trucks carrying 500 cows on his visit to North Korea. He brought 501 more cows on his second visit, on October 27.

    The total volume of food aids sent to North Korea from South Korea in 1995. South Korea sent 11.05 t of fertilizers in 1999, and provided the first “food loan” to North Korea in 2000. The loan consisted of 300,000 t of rice and 200,000 t of corn.

    The year of the groundbreaking ceremony for the railroad connecting North Korea’s Gyeongui Line and South Korea’s Donghae Line. A test run on the railroad was carried out in 2007.

    The total number of separated family members reunited in 1985 through the first hometown visit since the division. Starting on September 20, 35 families from South Korea and 30 families from North Korea visited each other in Seoul and Pyeongyang over a four day period.

  • 19,711 people

    The total number of separated family members reunited through the 20 reunions between 2000 and 2015, after the two Koreas reached the first agreement to exchange hometown visit groups on Liberation Day. A total of 4,120 families were reunited at Mt. Geumgang and other locations during this period.

    The total number of separated family members in South and North Korea reunited through 7 video reunions
    A total of 557 families exchanged video messages through the program.
