Kim Wuk, head of the Koman Hydraulic Co., stresses the importance of 'humans,' meaning his workforce.

Kim Wuk, head of the Koman Hydraulic Co., said simply that, "Everything is here, except for a large enough skilled workforce."

Koman Hydraulic specializes in producing industrial hoses and hose fitting systems. It produces over 2,000 products, and they are exported to more than 30 countries, including in North America, Central & South America and the Middle East. Kim noted the importance of his workforce, of which he has never had enough.

Koman constructed its third factory in 2013, in the Haman Industrial Complex. Kim said, "The infrastructure is well-equipped, but we are short of laborers. I believe that success will only come when things are in balance overall."

Well aware of the importance of his workers, Kim generously invests in the foreign laborers working at his company. All the workers are given spacious rooms, one per person, and share laundry and kitchen facilities. There is a gym and other leisure facilities to help them take a good rest. The highlight is a small horseback riding track stabled with two horses.

"Profits are to be shared with our consumers," said Kim, explaining his management philosophy. He emphasized that he wants to share the profits generated in the factory with his consumers, shareholders and workers.

He added that, "I think it would be better to keep working harder on our 'Red Ocean Strategy,' instead of turning toward a 'Blue Ocean Strategy.' Koman's products are recognized for their high quality, and we will always strive to maintain our standards." Kim was referring to a business theory that compares a crowded market place and a market where a company is the sole player.

Kim's management philosophy is deeply embedded in the way he produces his hoses. Koman is responsible for the complete production process, ranging from design, forging, heat treatments, fabricating, bending and assembling, through to packaging. The company's technology has been recognized both domestically and overseas.

Koman began exporting hydraulic hoses in 1989, starting in Southeast Asia. Exceeding USD 10 million in exports last year, it recently won an award at the 51st Trade Day ceremony. A number of clients have asked the company to print "KOMAN" or "Made in Korea" on its hydraulic products. Currently, the company also provides consultation services to companies in Eastern Europe that have shown an interest in its technologies. Kim said that he expects to generate more than USD 15 million in exports this year.
