Busan Metropolitan City on May 18 concluded a business agreement with the Korea Immigration Service, Korea Foundation and the city's taxi union to set up the service.
When a passenger in the city scans the QR code on a public call taxi under the Dongbaek brand, he or she can receive interpretation service from a combined 170 interpreters from 17 countries by phone or chat app.
The 12 languages available for interpretation are English, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Russian, Indonesian, Uzbek, Mongolian, Burmese, Thai, Cambodian and Tagalog (Philippines).
Twenty thousand of the estimated 24,000 taxis registered in Busan are part of the Dongbaek line. The city government will first set up the service on Dongbaek cabs and gradually expand it to all.
Cho Yeongtae, director general of Busan Metropolitan City's Transportation Bureau, said, "Through this agreement, the foundation has been laid to develop Dongbaek Taxis as a brand of the international tourist city of Busan."
