Kimchi recorded a trade surplus in the first half of this year thanks to continued export growth.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Aug. 6 said kimchi exports reached USD 80.57 million and imports USD 78.85 million in the first half of this year for the item's first surplus since 2021.

By market, such shipments to the U.S. grew 22.7% year on year to USD 20.2 million, those to Europe 3.2% to USD 9.1 million and Japan 2.7% to USD 33.8 million.

Export volume also increased 3% from 22,000 tons in the first half of last year to 23,000 tons in the first six months of this year.

The ministry said, "We recorded a surplus in (kimchi) trade of USD 1.7 million in the first half of this year thanks to higher demand from the U.S. and European markets.”

It also announced a third comprehensive plan to promote the kimchi industry for four years from this year with a target of USD 300 million in exports by 2027.

The ministry pledged support for stimulating kimchi exports by expanding the designation abroad of Kimchi Day and launching a council for kimchi-related organizations to respond to issues in the industry.
