Exports of ramyeon (instant noodles) this year have surpassed KRW 1 trillion for the first time since the nation's first version was made in 1963.

Trade statistics from the Korea Customs Service on Nov. 21 said such shipments in the first 10 months of the year rose 24.7% from the same period last year to a provisional USD 785.25 million (KRW 1.097 trillion), breaking the previous record set last year of USD 765.41 million.

Exports only include products made domestically and sold abroad. Thus the scale of ramyeon exports is far bigger considering those made at plants abroad and sold in their host countries.

Such shipments have steadily risen every year since hitting USD 218.8 million in 2015.

In weight, the exports marked 201,363 tons over the period, up 13.9%.

By country, China was the biggest market in the first 10 months of the year with USD 174.45 million, followed by the U.S. with USD 107 million, Japan USD 48.66 million, the Netherlands USD 48.64 million and Malaysia USD 39.67 million.

In addition, 128 countries each had ramyeon exports exceeding USD 2,000.
