Domestic battery giant SK On will supply KRW 15 trillion worth of electric vehicle (EV) batteries to Japanese automaker Nissan.

SK On on March 19 that it signed a deal with Nissan to provide batteries with a combined scale of 99.4 gigawatt hours from 2028-33, an amount sufficient to power about a million mid-size EVs.

The batteries will be high-performance high-nickel pouch cells made in North America. Nissan will use them in four next-generation EV models for that market produced at its plant in Canton, Mississippi.

This marks SK On's first partnership with a Japanese automaker and is expected to expand the Korean company's supply base in North America, a key market.

"SK On's outstanding battery technology and competitiveness have again earned recognition," SK On CEO and President Lee Seok-Hee said. "The active use of our output capacity and know-how in North America will help our electrification partners successfully make the transition to EVs."
