Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has been named the main contractor to build two nuclear plants in the Czech Republic for KRW 26 trillion.
KHNP on May 2 said it will conclude in Prague on May 7 the main contract for the project at the Dukovany complex. This is the first nuclear plant export by a Korean company since the Barakah project in the United Arab Emirates in 2009.
The deal stipulates that KHNP will build the fifth and sixth plants in Dukovany, which has four reactors in operation, at a cost of CZK 400 billion (KRW 26 trillion).
The two plants are expected to operate in order from 2036. The Czech government aims to raise nuclear energy's share of its national power generation from 37% in 2022 to 50% by 2050 by building more reactors in Dukovany and Temelin.
For this project, KHNP is leading a consortium including the government-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) and its subsidiaries such as KEPCO KPS and KEPCO NF, along with private companies such as Doosan Enerbility and Daewoo E&C.
