“The Bachelor,” which has been on TV since 2002, is a dating program in which a bachelor chooses a single woman out of 25 candidates after a series of eliminations. The reality show is aired on prime time from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Monday. Some 10 million U.S. viewers watch the program every week. It is shown in 27 countries around the world, including the U.S. The Korean episode was shot in and around Seoul over four days from September 30 to October 3 last year.

In the episode, Juan Pablo Galavis, an American-born Venezuelan former professional soccer player, enjoyed dating 13 candidates in Seoul. In particular, the rose-giving ceremony, in which Galavis eliminates one female candidate, was videotaped in Gyeonghuigung Palace and the spectacular night view of the palace was seen by millions of viewers. The reality show actors also experienced a traditional Korean tea ceremony in Bukchon Hanok Village and got a taste of tteokbokgi, a spicy red rice cake dish, in Gwangjang Market. They walked around Hongik University and the neighborhood of Myeong-dong and sang songs in a noraebang.

The scene in which the cast dances as backup in a small 2NE1 concert on stage in the Times Square mall in western Seoul caused a huge sensation. Earlier, they visited the headquarters of YG Entertainment, the girl group’s management company, and the members of 2NE1 themselves taught them how to dance to their hit song “I’m The Best.” Later, they joined the group on stage, dancing as backup dancers.

The cast was excited by performing with 2NE1. “2NE1 is the biggest K-pop group in Korea. The five-story mall was packed with people,” said one of the female cast members.

After the episode aired, ”I’m The Best” shot instantly up the charts. It climbed to third place in iTunes’ American Electronic Singles Chart and achieved first place in that chart’s Canadian counterpart on February 28.
