The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will present a series of year-end classical music concerts throughout the month.

The “Classic Renaissance” show will kick off the month-long series at the St. Mary & Nicholas Seoul Anglican Cathedral in central Seoul on December 4. The opening concert will feature masterpieces by Haydn, Handel and Tomaso Vitali, under the baton of assistant conductor Choi Soo-yeoul.

The orchestra will show off its orchestral harmony with Haydn’s “Symphony No. 1” and then some of Handel’s “Coronation Anthems.” It will continue to play Schoenberg’s “Transfigured Night,” a string sextet inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name, and Vitali’s “Chaconne.” The orchestra will be accompanied by organist Shin Dong-il.

For its series of year-end shows, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will bring concert-goers to a musical world covering many of the masters of classical music history, including Beethoven, Haydn, Strauss and Handel.

On December 12, the orchestra’s principle director Chung Myung-whun will collaborate with acclaimed cellist Jian Wang from China at the Seoul Arts Center. The Chinese musician appears on stage together with the orchestra for the first time in five years.

For the upcoming concert, the cellist will play Haydn’s "Cello Concerto No. 1" and Strauss’ “Don Quixote.”

The same venue will resonate with sounds of Beethoven’s "Symphony No. 9, Choral” on December 26 and 27. The Beethoven piece will be reinterpreted by Italian soprano Maria Luigia Borsi, who has gained recognition on the Italian operatic scene, as well as mezzo soprano Yang Song-mi, tenor Kim Chung-hoon and bass Park Jong-min, to orchestral tunes created under the strokes of Chung’s baton.
